When I Rise 2017

“I Dream in Color” An Evening in Tribute to Laurie Gale Rubin – When I Rise was created to recognize an individual or individuals who have overcome unfair obstacles in life and have risen against those odds to become an outstanding human being. We find such individuals in the arts, the sports world and in so many other walks of life. This person is someone who has exemplified and embodied the true human spirit and has forged a path embodied the true human spirit and has forged a path that others recognize as a noble endeavor. The fifth annual When I Rise honored LAURIE GALE RUBIN the opera singer, blind since birth, has joyfully and resiliently pursued her dreams. These days, she’s broadening her palette with a school program, recordings and a memoir.

7th Annual Festival of Opera and Arts 2016

Presented by Opera Arts and the City of Palm Desert ….. It is with great pleasure that we present this Festival of world class music, played by fine musicians and sung by outstanding opera professionals. A rousing welcome to our new Conductor, Barbara Day Turner. This event would not be possible without the financial support of our loyal sponsors; individuals, businesses and Foundations, and we cannot thank them enough. Without them there would not be a Festival where all are welcome. To our Music Director Victoria Kirsch, Conductor Barbara Day Turner, Orchestra Contractor and Concertmaster Kevin Kumar, Librarian Brent Anderson, and Joe Antillon, of X.I.L. Sound and Lighting; mille grazie for your teamwork and for creating something that we remember long after the event is over. Many thanks to Karen Riley , SCRAP Gallery, Louisa Castrodale and all her students who took part in our contest, and to all the other artists. We are especially happy to have had three wonderful jazz musicians from Palm Springs HIgh School, Kurt and Hugh Vaughn and Javier Molina, and the beautiful pianist Mr. Gale Enger . More special thanks to the staff of the Well in the Desert for setting up and breaking down and going beyond the call of duty in everything they do, and thank you to the Parks and Recreation District who make the day easy for all. Plato is quoted as having said “…Music gives soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” I believe that is all true, and I believe there is nothing more complete or more beautiful than Opera. Musically yours, Arlene Arlene Rosenthal, President
